PROJECT SUMMARY

Bringing together navigation experts from Norway and Finland

The CANDO project brings together navigation researchers from SINTEF in Norway and the University of Helsinki in Finland to help solve the problems encountered by a team of users entering un-mapped buildings to conduct time critical tasks. This research area is particularly important for blue force tracking as well as first responders and emergency services personnel, who need an accurate navigation solution even when GPS is blocked by the building structure and when it's not feasible to deploy and calibrate infrastructure based navigation solutions ahead of time.
The researchers from the University of Helsinki are world leaders in vision based navigation systems, while the researchers from SINTEF are pioneers in the use of user to user ranging links for collaborative navigation. Through cross training activities and combined design evolution, it is hoped that by the end of the project term in 2023 a team of users utilizing the developed technology will be able to navigate indoors for extended periods of time without GPS or the need to rely on extremely bulky or costly equipment packs.

OVERVIEW OF 2021-2023 TRAINING COURSES AND MEETINGS

Throughout the course of the CANDO project, SINTEF and the University of Helsinki shall conduct a series of training courses for the benefit of the other research institute.

The large majority of these cross training activities were conducted digitally, but after travel restrictions were removed it was thankfully possible to have in person meetings once again.

PROJECT KICKOFF

February 2020

This meeting held digitally was used as a project kick off and general overview meeting for SINTEF and the University of Helsinki teams.

SINTEF TO THE UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI COURSE SERIES 1

February 2021 - Through September 2023

The first block of 13 cross training courses from SINTEF to the University of Helsinki were held in traditional lecture form on assorted navigation topics (GNSS, Inertial, sensor fusion, and others).

UNIVERSITY OF HESLINKI TO SINTEF TRAINING COURSE SERIES

June 2021 - Through September 2023

More than 30 training courses have been carried out over the term of the project on subjects ranging from embedded system design through navigation principles and signal of opportunity exploitation.

FINAL PROJECT MEETING

The project final cross-training and testing were carried out in Helsinki Finland on the 5th of September 2023

In addition to the planned indoor-outdoor tests of the developed Team Navigation System units, the project team had the chance to see a presentation of one of the upcoming academic research papers based on project work to be  published by the project team.

THE PAPER SHOWN HERE WAS PRESENTEDT AT THE IPIN 2023 IN NUREMBERG GERMANY
